She wasn’t going to think about what just happened with Ethan. About what else almost happened. Would have happened, if not for Eva’s text. Saved by the text.

Luckily, she didn’t have to think about it because Eva arrived back at the apartment in record time, and she had news. That was the only thing Poppy could figure as her roommate burst into the room saying, “Oh. My. God!”

“What?” What had Wyatt done or said after Ethan had left?

A part of her hoped it was something horrible so she had an irrefutable motivation to leave. The job and Bitter End. Because right now, in a post orgasm haze, she was too damn tempted to stay.

Staying for a man like Ethan Wilder, in fact making life decisions because of any man at all, was not something she was going to do. Not ever again.

Eva closed and locked the door, then glanced around. “We alone?”

Shit. Did she know Ethan had come here tonight? Did he tell them he was going to or had she guessed? Why would she guess?

She lifted her palms to her cheeks. Did she have a sex glow? Oh God. Did the room reek of what they did?

Poppy moved to one of the three Yankee Candles she’d ordered on Amazon for the apartment. As she lit it, she said. “Of course, we’re alone.”

Her inflection hopefully conveyed how ridiculous she felt that question had been.

“Why?” she continued.

“Because Olivia thinks she might be pregnant,” Eva’s voice dipped low on the last intensely whispered word.

“Oh. My. God,” she echoed Eva’s original statement, which fit the gravity of the situation perfectly. “Is she sure?”

Kicking off her shoes and tossing her car keys on the table Eva stalked across the room and hopped onto the bed, landing with a bounce. “Not yet. She’s late. She’s afraid to take a test.”

“Living in denial isn’t going to make it go away if she is,” Poppy pointed out. She might not have any personal experience with that kind of thing but she’d lived in the sorority house for years where there’d been more than one pregnancy scare.

Besides, she was a virgin, not an idiot and she’d aced biology in school.

Almost not a virgin anymore…

She swatted away that thought from her subconscious and turned her attention back to Eva.

“I told her she has to buy a test tomorrow. She’s afraid to get it in town.”

Poppy bobbed her head to the side. “Can’t blame her there.”

She wouldn’t want to walk into the mini mart attached to the gas station and grab a pregnancy test in a town this small. Especially since the possible baby daddy was a descendant of the founding father of the town. The news would spread like wildfire. And speaking of the impending father…

“Does Wyatt know?” she asked.

“No! And she doesn’t want to tell him.”

“Why not?”

“She’s afraid he won’t be happy about it, but he’ll, of course, try to do the right thing and ask her to marry him anyway.”

She nodded, understanding. She’d spent a lifetime
